When Lily was born I started writing her letters. I have saved them and one day I plan to give her this big ol'file full of them. Who knows when that day may be, I will let God help me determine the right time. But, I know that each one I write is from the heart and I hope one day she will treasure them.
Here's one I wrote today, a post Valentine's Day letter. Hope you enjoy!
Lily,
Today is the day after Valentine's Day 2011, and I wanted to write you a letter that you will be able to read in the future. I don't know when that day will come, but I know I wanted you to have it whenever you needed it!
Valentine's Day is one of those weird/useless holiday's in my opinion, and here's why: I don't believe that one "special" day of the year should be SO important to show someone you love them. Shouldn't this happen every day? I mean, I know we don't need huge chocolate hearts or even candy hearts with messages on them daily, but shouldn't we show those special to us we love them all the time? :) But, I know that since you are a female you may think a little different. I know that you may acutally look forward to this "holiday." I also know by all accounts that you will have some unforgettable occasions on Valentine's Day, and in the same respect I know that you will have some occasions you will want to forget! :) That is why I am writing you this letter, for times like that! I want you to be able to pull this letter out of the drawer or dusty notebook and read how your Daddy feels about you. I can only hope that these words will make your day better!
Lily, I want you to know from the moment I laid eyes on you, I was in love. You have been a tremendous blessing to my life. I know God has used you as His instrument in many ways, but I am certain one of those ways was to help mold me into the man He needed me to be. As of now, that is still happening! I want you to know that you have grown into an amazingly beautiful person, both inside and out! I want you to know that I am most proud to be your Daddy and I take it as an honor that God has given me this role.
So, whenever you read this letter, know that I love you beyond compare and I feel more than blessed to have you as my daughter.
Love Always,
Daddy
Just Thinking-
So sweet Nick! She will cherish these one day!
