It's not worth it.....

Have you ever given much thought to how we consume our lives with all kinds of crazy and useless "things"? This week marks the kick-off of the College Football season, and I know there are some fans out there that are chomping at the bit to get it started! I will admit I am a Tennessee Volunteer fan and I will probably take some time Saturday to watch their opening game against Western Kentucky, but you can bet I won't be wearing my lucky t-shirt! It is so crazy to see thousands upon thousands of fans each year consume themselves with college football. I mean I love to watch the game and I want my team to win, but listen I have seen people get physically sick over a loss.....and the kicker being, they are just a FAN!!! WHY? Why can't people just go and enjoy the atmosphere and enjoy being hanging out with your friends...because it is not life or death!!

Last year Amanda and I took our traditional early November trip to Knoxville. We use it as a trip and weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary (which is actually on November 20th, but it is too close to Thanksgiving to celebrate then). In 2 years prior, we had taken in the Tennessee - Arkansas game, but this year it just so happened that the Vols were playing the Wyoming Cowboys. As most of you know the Cowboys of Wyoming are not a perennial power and more than likely they will never win a National Championship. But you have to remember Amanda and I love to go for the atmosphere...we love the crisp fall air and the beauty of East Tennessee during this time of year!! Well, needless to say, Tennessee has fallen out of the ranks of the feared over the last couple of years, but we thought surely they could beat Wyoming. As you know, they did not! It was probably one of the most painful experiences I have ever had as a Tennessee fan and embarrassing to say the least. But, Amanda and I had a great time! I would go out on a limb and say we are among the few who could say this about that day....because once we exited the stadium you would have thought we just entered a funeral home. No one said a word, people were walking with their heads hung as if their best friend had just died....I had never experienced this before.

This event caused me to think this: Why do people put so much of their lives into something that does not matter? Yeah, this was a terrible performance by a football team, but its not the end of the world!! Why do we as people live our lives for things that cannot fulfill us? I mean we should feel blessed to have a chance to spend a day doing what we wanted to do, but instead we wrap our lives so much in STUFF that we don't recognize our blessings!! No matter if the University of Tennessee ever wins another game, God will remain!! Once we find fulfillment in God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit little "things" and the small "stuff" in life doesn't matter!!

This year Amanda and I have decided not to go to another game, but instead we are going to enjoy our time together taking in God's wonderful beauty of the Appalachian Mountains and spend a day in Asheville, North Carolina at the Biltmore!! College football is great, but is isn't that great!!

God is Great- Nick
